We live in a time when fear is too often used as a motive for our actions.

This is especially apparent in students going through the college admissions process.

The fear that creeps in can cause students to lose sleep, shut down, and ultimately decide on whatever road might be easiest — maybe where their friends are going, or wherever mom and dad think is the best choice.

At College Wingspan, we REMOVE THE FEAR! The work that a student does with the College Wingspan counselor is the discipline and preparation required to create confidence in themselves and in their college selection. A decision based on personal goals and excitement, not fear and uncertainty.

At College Wingspan, each student receives individual guidance in accentuating their unique qualities, and identifying colleges that match up with who they are now, and who they’d like their future selves to be. We will help bring out the student’s very best writing for an impactful admission essay. We utilize a shared software platform with detailed organization of deadlines for applications, additional programs, and scholarships, so that they are all met well ahead of time.

Once the acceptance letters and financial aid packages roll in, we will take the necessary time to discern what is truly the best fit for the student. The College Wingspan approach will remove the anxiety and have the student excited about this process. This is their journey, their future — their wingspan!

Hi there! I’m Veronica.

I appreciate you taking the time to check out College Wingspan! This work is so very meaningful to me. My passion stems from an eight-year career in college admissions — four years with the University of South Carolina (large public), and four years with Drake University (small private) — in which I have counseled far too many students who experience crippling anxiety over something that should be exciting and joyful. This has affected me deeply. I know that high school counselors would offer more help with the college admissions process if they had the time to do so. Unfortunately, there is a tremendous need for more personalized guidance, but very few  local resources for students and families. Consequently, College Wingspan was conceived!

In my years working in admissions, I have reviewed thousands of college applications and essays, and revised hundreds of financial aid packages. However, my favorite aspect of the job has always been working one-on-one with the students. Even before entering the world of higher education, I enjoyed teaching English Language Arts where I considered instructing students on exceptional essay composition as one of my greatest accomplishments.  I have conducted dozens of workshops on: college fit, admission essays, campus visit strategies, and understanding college costs. I genuinely enjoy working with teenagers, and I have two myself! My oldest will be starting college in the fall of 2022 — so exciting! My second daughter is a student at Batavia High School. My husband is my biggest fan and is excited about all of our adventures. We have two cats, a pandemic puppy, and we thoroughly love our Fox Valley community!

I very much look forward to meeting you and your student.

All the best,
Veronica McLaughlin
